The low-cost unique chain is ending 2021 on a high note by opening up new locations in Brooklyn, N.Y.; Mentor, Ohio; Miami; and the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The latter store is located in the Bridgemarket building, which is connected to the Queensboro Bridge that goes in and out of the borough of Queens.

The architect Henry Hornbostel and the engineer Gustav Lindenthal covered the section below the Queensboro Bridge in tiles designed by Rafael Guastavino, according to Gustavino’s.

This “arcade” came to be known as Bridgemarket, a produce market that was open year round until the 1930s. The location was later occupied by the New York City Department of Transportation. In 1995, it was developed into a 98,000-square-feet commercial space with a market, restaurant, and retail space.

The space previously housed a Food Emporium for nearly two decades until 2015, before Trader Joe’s petitioned to take over in 2020, according to Bloomberg. The chain noted that it “consulted our maps and compass and have found a terrific location for a store in the Upper East Side, NY.”

There are almost 20 Trader Joe’s stores in the New York City metro area, including Brooklyn, Queens, New Jersey, and the northern suburbs. However, the 20,000-square-foot Bridgemarket location on East 59th Street and First Avenue is unique because it is the only location on the Upper East Side.

“Dozens” of hungry shoppers began lining up nearly two hours before the official grand opening on Dec. 2 at 8 a.m., according to Patch. Within 30 minutes, “a fast-moving line snaked around the rear of the store, which an employee said is one of the company’s largest in the city,” the outlet’s Nick Garber wrote. As an added bonus, a jazz band entertained customers as they explored the aisles of the new location.
