1. What Cefuroxime Axetil is and what it is used for Cefuroxime Axetil is an antibiotic. It belongs to a group of medicines called cephalosporins. It is used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Cefuroxime Axetil is used to treat: – infections of the ear, nose and throat – infections of the skin and soft tissue – urinary tract infections – gonorrhoea – bronchitis – pneumonia Cefuroxime Axetil may also be used to prevent infections after surgery.

What you need to know before you take Cefuroxime Axetil Do not take Cefuroxime Axetil: – if you are allergic to cefuroxime or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6) – if you are allergic to other cephalosporin antibiotics Warnings and precautions Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Cefuroxime Axetil: – if you have kidney or liver problems – if you have a history of allergic reactions to other antibiotics – if you are pregnant or breastfeeding Other medicines and Cefuroxime Axetil Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines. This includes medicines obtained without a prescription, including herbal medicines. This is because Cefuroxime Axetil can affect the way some other medicines work. Also some medicines can affect the way Cefuroxime Axetil works.

3. How to take Cefuroxime Axetil Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The usual dose is: Adults and children over 12 years: The usual dose is one 500mg tablet twice a day. Children under 12 years: The usual dose is one 250mg tablet twice a day. Elderly: The usual dose is one 500mg tablet twice a day. Your doctor may adjust the dose if necessary. How to take Cefuroxime Axetil Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. Do not chew the tablets. Take the tablets at regular intervals. Do not take more than two tablets in one day. Do not take more than the recommended dose. If you take more Cefuroxime Axetil than you should If you take more Cefuroxime Axetil than you should, tell your doctor or go to the nearest hospital emergency department straight away. Take the medicine pack with you. This is so the doctor knows what you have taken.

4. Possible side effects Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Stop taking Cefuroxime Axetil and see a doctor straight away if you notice any of the following serious side effects – you may need urgent medical treatment: – signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, itching or hives on the skin, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body, shortness of breath, wheezing or trouble breathing – signs of a severe skin reaction such as blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth, fever, sore throat, joint pain, general ill feeling – signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips,
