But according to dietitian and nutritionist, Karen Ansel, there’s one simple thing you can do to give yourself a much-needed energy boost: drink plenty of water.

Ansel explains that dehydration is one of the most common causes of fatigue. “When you’re dehydrated, your body has to work harder to do its job,” she says. “That means your heart has to pump harder, your muscles have to work harder, and your brain has to work harder. All of this takes energy, and when you don’t have enough, you feel tired and sluggish.”

The good news is that it’s easy to prevent dehydration. Ansel recommends drinking at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. “If you’re exercising or spending time in the sun, you’ll need to drink even more,” she adds. “And if you’re drinking coffee or alcohol, you’ll need to drink even more to make up for the fluids you’re losing.”

Ansel also recommends avoiding sugary drinks like soda and energy drinks. “These drinks may give you a temporary energy boost, but they can also cause a crash later on,” she says. “Plus, they’re full of empty calories that can add up quickly.”
