Walmart is Pulling This Popular Ice Cream from its Freezers — Eat This Not That

Walmart is saying goodbye to one of its most popular ice cream flavors. The retail giant recently announced that it will no longer be stocking its Great Value brand of Rocky Road ice cream in its freezers.

The news was first reported by the blog The Impulsive Buy, which noted that the flavor had been a staple in Walmart’s freezers for years. The blog also noted that the flavor had been spotted in stores as recently as last month.

The flavor was a fan favorite, with many customers taking to social media to express their disappointment. One customer wrote on Twitter, “Walmart is discontinuing Rocky Road ice cream?! That’s my favorite flavor!”

Walmart has not commented on the decision to discontinue the flavor, but it’s likely due to a shift in consumer tastes. Rocky Road is a classic flavor, but it’s not as popular as newer, trendier flavors like salted caramel and cookie dough.

If you’re a fan of Rocky Road, don’t despair. You can still find the flavor in other stores, including Target and Kroger. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can try making your own Rocky Road ice cream at home.

For people living with sensitivities and allergies, food labels declaring ingredients that are the most common allergens—like shellfish, milk, tree nuts, wheat, soy, and more—are extremely helpful. For instance, over 6 million people in the U.S. are allergic to peanuts, according to Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE). Unfortunately, one type of ice cream sold at Walmart was just recalled because of labeling issues as it may contain undeclared peanuts and could cause a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction.

The Chocolate Marshmallow Premium Ice Cream from Turkey Hill usually does not contain peanuts, but a consumer contacted the company after discovering their container contained what appeared to be the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream, the recall announcement posted by the FDA says.

The containers were sold in over 400 Walmart stores in six states including, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

The recall notice says that only 385 of the 48-ounce containers of the affected ice cream have been purchased by consumers between April 14 and 19. Although Turkey Hill says all retail stores that received the product were instructed to remove it from grocery store floors immediately, some of these could still be in customers’ freezers, since the sell-by date printed on the bottom of the package is 03/02/2023.

Peanut allergies have been on the rise in recent years—especially among children, according to the Cleveland Clinic—making it even more important for anyone who purchased this ice cream to check it for the error.

Symptoms experienced by someone with a peanut allergy who consumes the nut include difficulty breathing, hives or a skin rash, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea, swelling in the tongue, lips, or throat, and even anaphylaxis, which makes it hard or impossible to breathe.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the only food sold at Walmart that’s been recently recalled. A certain type of vegetable sold in over 1,000 Walmart stores in 18 states was pulled from the produce section because it could be contaminated with Salmonella. Read all the must-know details here.
