WHAT TRANEXAMIC ACID 500MG + MEFENAMIC 250MG TABLETS ARE AND WHAT THEY ARE USED FOR Tranexamic Acid 500mg + Mefenamic 250mg Tablets are a combination of two medicines: Tranexamic Acid and Mefenamic Acid. Tranexamic Acid belongs to a group of medicines called antifibrinolytics. It works by blocking the breakdown of blood clots. Mefenamic Acid belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works by blocking the production of certain natural substances that cause pain and inflammation. Tranexamic Acid 500mg + Mefenamic 250mg Tablets are used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding. 2. BEFORE YOU TAKE TRANEXAMIC ACID 500MG + MEFENAMIC 250MG TABLETS Do not take Tranexamic Acid 500mg + Mefenamic 250mg Tablets if you: • are allergic (hypersensitive) to tranexamic acid, mefenamic acid or any of the other ingredients of Tranexamic Acid 500mg + Mefenamic 250mg Tablets (listed in section 6) • have a history of blood clots or thrombosis • have a history of stroke or heart attack • have severe liver or kidney problems • are pregnant or breast-feeding • are taking other medicines containing tranexamic acid or mefenamic acid. Take special care with Tranexamic Acid 500mg + Mefenamic 250mg Tablets if you: • have a history of asthma • have a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding • have a history of heart, liver or kidney problems • have high blood pressure • have diabetes • are elderly. Taking other medicines Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. In particular, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medicines: • anticoagulants (medicines used to thin the blood) • other medicines containing tranexamic acid or mefenamic acid • aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) • corticosteroids (medicines used to reduce inflammation) • methotrexate (a medicine used to treat certain types of cancer and rheumatic diseases) • medicines used to treat high blood pressure • medicines used to treat depression • medicines used to treat epilepsy • medicines used to treat HIV infection • medicines used to treat diabetes • medicines used to treat fungal infections • medicines used to treat tuberculosis • medicines used to treat infections • medicines used to treat gout. Pregnancy and breast-feeding Do not take Tranexamic Acid 500mg + Mefenamic 250mg Tablets if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. Driving and using machines Tranexamic Acid 500mg + Mefenamic 250mg Tablets are not known to affect your ability to drive or use machines. 3. HOW TO TAKE TRANEXAMIC ACID 500MG + MEFENAMIC 250MG TABLETS Always take Tranexamic Acid 500mg + Mefenamic 250mg Tablets exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The usual dose is one tablet three times a day. Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. Do not chew the tablets. Do not take more than three tablets in 24 hours. Do not take Tranexamic Acid 500mg + Mefenamic 250mg Tablets for more than five days. If your symptoms persist or worsen, consult your doctor. Take the medicine pack with you. Symptoms of an overdose may include: • nausea • vomiting • stomach pain • dizziness • drowsiness • confusion. If you forget to take Tranexamic Acid 500mg + Mefenamic 250mg Tablets If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. 4. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS Like all medicines, Tranexamic Acid 500mg + Mefenamic 250mg Tablets can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Stop taking Tranexamic Acid 500mg + Mefenamic 250mg Tablets and tell your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects: • signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing • signs of a blood clot such as pain, swelling, warmth or redness in one leg, chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing up blood • signs of a stroke such as sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body, sudden confusion, difficulty speaking or understanding, sudden blurred vision, sudden difficulty walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, severe headache with no known cause • signs of a heart attack such as chest pain or discomfort which may spread to the arms, neck, jaw or back, feeling sick, sweating, shortness of breath • signs of liver problems such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain • signs of kidney problems such as decreased amount of urine, swelling of the feet or ankles, shortness of breath, fatigue. Other side effects include: • headache • dizziness • nausea • vomiting • diarrhoea • abdominal pain • rash • itching • hives • difficulty breathing • swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat • fever • joint pain • muscle pain • fatigue • depression • anxiety • insomnia • blurred vision • ringing in the ears • increased blood pressure • increased heart rate • increased blood sugar • decreased appetite • weight gain • increased liver enzymes. HOW TO STORE TRANEXAMIC ACID 500MG + MEFENAMIC 250MG TABLETS Keep out of the reach and sight of children. Do not use Tranexamic Acid 500mg + Mefenamic 250mg Tablets after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and blister after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. Do not store above 25°C. Store in the original package in order to protect from moisture. Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment. 6.
