If you’re a cheese lover, you may want to check your local grocery store shelves. Recently, a recall was issued for several types of cheese sold in nine states due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall affects cheese sold under the brand names of Crave Brothers Farmstead Classics, Crave Brothers Les Frères, and Crave Brothers Fresh Curds.

The recall was issued by Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese Company, located in Waterloo, Wisconsin. The company is recalling the cheese due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.

The recalled cheese was sold in retail stores in the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. The cheese was sold in various sizes, including 5-ounce, 8-ounce, 16-ounce, and 5-pound packages. The affected cheese has a “sell by” date of July 1, 2018 or earlier.

If you have purchased any of the recalled cheese, you should not eat it. Instead, you should return it to the store where it was purchased for a full refund. If you have eaten any of the recalled cheese and are experiencing any of the symptoms of listeriosis, such as fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea, you should seek medical attention immediately.

If you’re looking for a delicious cheese to replace the recalled cheese, there are plenty of options. Consider trying a creamy brie, a sharp cheddar, or a nutty Gruyere. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, try a blue cheese or a goat cheese. There are so many delicious cheeses to choose from, so you’re sure to find one that you love.

Paris Brothers, Inc., a Kansas City-based food distribution company, has initiated a recall of more than 90 cheese products, due to the possibility of listeria contamination.

According to a notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recall applies to eight types of cheese that were sold in grocery stores across Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and a single store each in Florida and Mississippi. The cheeses, which were sold at Fareway, Hy-Vee, Price Chopper, and other stores, include:

  • Cottonwood River Cheddar
  • D’amir Brie Double Crème French Brie
  • Milton Prairie Breeze White Cheddar Style
  • Milton Tomato Garlic Cheddar
  • Paris Brothers Mild Cheddar
  • Paris Brothers Colby Jack
  • Paris Brothers Pepper Jack
  • Cervasi Pecorino Romano

The recalled items were produced on May 4, 5, and 6, 2022, and they have the lot codes 05042022, 05052022, or 05062022. However, as the notice points out, “Individual retail outlets may have relabeled the individual consumer packages.”

Although no illnesses have been reported, the FDA advises those who bought the recalled products to return them to their place of purchase for a full refund.

It’s important to note that food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. While healthy individuals who are infected may only experience short-term symptoms like high fever, headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, young children, frail or elderly people, or those with weakened immune systems can experience serious and sometimes fatal infections.

If you have any questions about the recall, you can call Paris Brothers, Inc. at 816-455-4188 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST., and ask for Doug Schnell, the company’s FDA contact.

Unfortunately, these cheeses aren’t the only products that have been recalled recently. Over the last two weeks alone, packaged salads, strawberries, and Jif peanut butter were pulled from grocery store shelves.
