Some Costco Locations Have This in the Parking Lot—Could More Be Coming?

Costco is known for its unbeatable prices and wide selection of products, but now the warehouse giant is taking its convenience to the next level. Some Costco locations have added a unique feature to their parking lots: electric vehicle charging stations.

The charging stations are located in the parking lots of select Costco locations in California, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii. The stations are powered by ChargePoint, a leading provider of electric vehicle charging solutions. Customers can use the stations to charge their electric vehicles while they shop.

The charging stations are a great way for Costco to show its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, and the charging stations make it easier for customers to make the switch to electric.

It’s unclear if Costco plans to expand the charging station program to more locations. However, the company has been making a number of moves to become more environmentally friendly, so it’s possible that more charging stations could be coming to a Costco near you.

The Costco warehouse in Salt Lake City, Utah is one of the biggest locations at 235,000 square feet, but a giant dairy room, full-sized roasting pigs and goats for sale, and thousands of bulk items aren’t the only features it has. One of the perks the warehouse members also enjoy is out in the parking lot.

A Costco run can last minutes, but also hours, and conveniently the parking lot in Salt Lake City has several electric car chargers. This location is one of quite a few that feature these, which were prevalent starting almost 30 years ago but disappeared in 2011. Lately, though, members on social media say the charging stations are useful, and more should be available. A post went up recently on the Costco side of Reddit, showing several sets of two chargers for cars in the parking lot at the Torrance, Calif. warehouse.

Over 100 people commented, many of them noting that a location in their area also features these stations. Similar posts from 2021 reveal some locations in Virginia, New Jersey, San Diego, and other areas have them too. One Costco member even asked if others believe more parking lots will get them—and many answered yes, especially now that grocery shopping is getting more technical.

However, nearly a decade ago, Costco was already ahead of the trend. It started putting in electric car charging stations in the 1990s at many of its California warehouses, Green Car Reports said back in 2011. Yet at the time it decided to remove them with no apparent reason. Nowadays electric cars are hitting the market more and more, as sales for them hit record numbers in 2021.

Could this mean more Costco parking lots will see some charging stations put in? Time will tell. Until then, here are 6 Best Fridge Staples to Buy at Costco Right Now, Dietitians Say.
