The recall affects the following products:

  • 28-ounce jars of “Archer Farms Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter” with a “best by” date of May 1, 2013
  • 28-ounce jars of “Archer Farms Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter” with a “best by” date of June 26, 2013
  • 28-ounce jars of “Archer Farms Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter” with a “best by” date of August 8, 2013
  • 28-ounce jars of “Archer Farms Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter” with a “best by” date of August 19, 2013
  • 28-ounce jars of “Archer Farms Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter” with a “best by” date of October 21, 2013

The recall was initiated after the company received a notification from the FDA that a sample of the product tested positive for Salmonella. The company has since ceased production and distribution of the product as the investigation continues.

Skippy Foods says 161,692 pounds of three of its peanut butter varieties have the potential to be contaminated with foreign substances.

The jars of Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread, Skippy Reduced Fat Chunky Peanut Butter Spread, and Skippy Creamy Peanut Butter Blended With Plant Protein may contain small fragments of stainless steel from a piece of manufacturing equipment. The problem was discovered by the manufacturing facility’s internal detection system, a recall notice posted by the company reads.

Almost 10,000 cases of the varieties of peanut butter included in the recall were shipped to 18 states, Skippy says, including California, Connecticut, Deleware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Massassuchetts, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin.

It says that the recall was issued out of an abundance of caution and that no consumer complaints associated with the three types of peanut butter have been made. All retailers that received the jars have been notified.

The jars contain “Best if Used By” dates of MAY0423 thought MAY1023. To see the full list of affected sizes and dates, click here. They also have a UPC code of 37600-10520, 37600-10667, 37600-10499, or 37600-88095.

“We apologize to our fans for this inconvenience. Our company is committed to product quality and will continue to invest in our processes to ensure the quality and wholesomeness of our products,” Skippy says while emphasizing that the “recall only affects a very limited number” of jars.

No other sizes or varieties of the company’s peanut butter are involved in the recall. If you have a jar in your pantry, do not consume it and either return it to the store where it was purchased or call the Skippy Foods Consumer Engagement line at 1-866-475-4779.
