Further information 1. What Nitrofurantoin is and what it is used for Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic. It is used to treat infections of the urinary tract. 2. Before you take Nitrofurantoin Do not take Nitrofurantoin if: • you are allergic (hypersensitive) to nitrofurantoin or any of the other ingredients of Nitrofurantoin (listed in section 6) • you have severe kidney problems • you have a blood disorder called porphyria • you are pregnant or breast-feeding (see section 3). Take special care with Nitrofurantoin • If you have kidney problems, your doctor may decide to reduce the dose of Nitrofurantoin or to monitor your kidney function more closely. • If you have liver problems, your doctor may decide to reduce the dose of Nitrofurantoin or to monitor your liver function more closely. • If you have a history of jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) or other liver problems, your doctor may decide to reduce the dose of Nitrofurantoin or to monitor your liver function more closely. • If you have a history of anaemia (low red blood cells) or other blood disorders, your doctor may decide to reduce the dose of Nitrofurantoin or to monitor your blood count more closely. • If you have a history of diabetes, your doctor may decide to reduce the dose of Nitrofurantoin or to monitor your blood sugar levels more closely. • If you have a history of gout, your doctor may decide to reduce the dose of Nitrofurantoin or to monitor your uric acid levels more closely. • If you have a history of asthma, your doctor may decide to reduce the dose of Nitrofurantoin or to monitor your breathing more closely. • If you have a history of epilepsy, your doctor may decide to reduce the dose of Nitrofurantoin or to monitor your seizures more closely. • If you have a history of heart problems, your doctor may decide to reduce the dose of Nitrofurantoin or to monitor your heart function more closely. • If you have a history of stomach or intestinal problems, your doctor may decide to reduce the dose of Nitrofurantoin or to monitor your digestive system more closely. • If you have a history of allergies, your doctor may decide to reduce the dose of Nitrofurantoin or to monitor your allergic reactions more closely. • If you are taking any other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription, herbal and complementary medicines, your doctor may decide to reduce the dose of Nitrofurantoin or to monitor your response to the medicine more closely. • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, your doctor may decide to reduce the dose of Nitrofurantoin or to monitor your pregnancy or breast-feeding more closely. Taking other medicines Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is especially important if you are taking any of the following: • antacids (medicines used to treat indigestion) • probenecid (a medicine used to treat gout) • cimetidine (a medicine used to treat stomach ulcers) • warfarin (a medicine used to thin the blood) • theophylline (a medicine used to treat asthma) • methotrexate (a medicine used to treat cancer) • cyclosporin (a medicine used to suppress the immune system) • phenytoin (a medicine used to treat epilepsy) • rifampicin (a medicine used to treat tuberculosis) • sulfinpyrazone (a medicine used to treat gout) • aminoglycosides (a group of antibiotics) • tetracyclines (a group of antibiotics) • quinolones (a group of antibiotics) • penicillins (a group of antibiotics). Pregnancy and breast-feeding Do not take Nitrofurantoin if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, tell your doctor before taking this medicine. Driving and using machines Nitrofurantoin may cause dizziness or drowsiness in some people. If you are affected, do not drive or operate machinery. Important information about some of the ingredients of Nitrofurantoin This medicine contains lactose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine. 3. How to take Nitrofurantoin Always take Nitrofurantoin exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The usual dose is: Adults and children over 12 years: The usual dose is one 100mg capsule taken four times a day. Children under 12 years: Not recommended. Elderly: Your doctor may decide to reduce the dose of Nitrofurantoin or to monitor your kidney function more closely. How to take Nitrofurantoin • Swallow the capsules whole with a glass of water. • Do not chew the capsules. • Take the capsules at regular intervals. • Do not take more than four capsules in any 24 hour period. • If you take more Nitrofurantoin than you should If you take more Nitrofurantoin than you should, tell your doctor or go to the nearest hospital casualty department straight away. Take the medicine pack with you. This is so the doctor knows what you have taken. If you forget to take Nitrofurantoin If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose as usual. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. If you stop taking Nitrofurantoin Do not stop taking Nitrofurantoin unless your doctor tells you to. 4. Possible side effects Like all medicines, Nitrofurantoin can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Stop taking Nitrofurantoin and tell your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects: • Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing. • Severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice). • Severe diarrhoea, blood in the stools. • Fever, sore throat, mouth ulcers, unusual bruising or bleeding. • Severe headache, confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, fits, blurred vision. • Painful or difficult urination, blood in the urine. • Chest pain, shortness of breath. • Unusual tiredness or weakness. • Dark urine, pale stools. Other side effects may include: • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, loss of appetite. • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness. • Skin rash, itching. • Joint pain. • Changes in blood tests. • Other side effects include: • Headache • Dizziness • Nausea • Vomiting • Diarrhoea • Loss of appetite • Stomach pain • Skin rash • Itching • Vaginal itching or discharge • Allergic reactions • Unusual tiredness or weakness • Dark urine or pale stools If any of the side effects gets serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist. 5. HOW TO STORE NITROFURANTOIN Keep out of the reach and sight of children. Do not store above 25°C. Do not use Nitrofurantoin after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and blister after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment. 6. FURTHER INFORMATION What Nitrofurantoin contains The active substance is nitrofurantoin. Each capsule contains 100mg of nitrofurantoin. The other ingredients are maize starch, lactose, magnesium stearate, gelatin, titanium dioxide (E171), erythrosine (E127), yellow iron oxide (E172) and black iron oxide (E172). What Nitrofurantoin looks like and contents of the pack Nitrofurantoin 100mg Capsules are yellow, hard gelatin capsules with a black band printed with ‘NITROFURANTOIN 100’. They are available in packs of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 90, 100, 120, 150, 180, 200, 250, 300 and 500 capsules. Not all pack sizes may be marketed.
