Further information 1. What Fexofenadine is and what it is used for Fexofenadine is an antihistamine. It is used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) and hives (urticaria). It works by blocking the action of histamine, which is a substance produced by the body when it reacts to a foreign substance such as pollen, dust or animal hair. 2. Before you take Fexofenadine Do not take Fexofenadine if: • you are allergic (hypersensitive) to fexofenadine hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of Fexofenadine (listed in section 6) • you are taking terfenadine, astemizole or mizolastine (other antihistamines) Take special care with Fexofenadine: • if you have kidney or liver problems • if you have a history of heart problems • if you have a history of epilepsy • if you have a history of asthma • if you have a history of glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye) • if you have a history of urinary retention (difficulty passing urine) • if you have a history of prostate problems • if you are pregnant or breast-feeding Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Fexofenadine if you are taking any of the following medicines: • ketoconazole or itraconazole (used to treat fungal infections) • erythromycin or clarithromycin (antibiotics used to treat infections) • cimetidine (used to treat stomach ulcers) • ritonavir (used to treat HIV infection) • quinidine (used to treat heart rhythm problems) • warfarin (used to thin the blood) • digoxin (used to treat heart problems) • theophylline (used to treat asthma) • phenobarbital (used to treat epilepsy) • phenytoin (used to treat epilepsy) • carbamazepine (used to treat epilepsy) • rifampicin (used to treat tuberculosis) • amiodarone (used to treat heart rhythm problems) • verapamil (used to treat high blood pressure) • diltiazem (used to treat high blood pressure) • fluvoxamine (used to treat depression) • fluoxetine (used to treat depression) • paroxetine (used to treat depression) Taking other medicines Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. 3. How to take Fexofenadine Adults and children 12 years and over: The recommended dose is one tablet (120mg) taken once a day. Children 6 to 11 years: The recommended dose is one tablet (60mg) taken once a day. Elderly: The recommended dose is one tablet (60mg) taken once a day. If you take more Fexofenadine than you should If you take more Fexofenadine than you should, talk to a doctor or go to a hospital straight away. Take the medicine pack with you. This is so the doctor knows what you have taken. 4. Possible side effects Like all medicines, Fexofenadine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Stop taking Fexofenadine and see a doctor or go to a hospital straight away if you notice any of the following serious side effects: • swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat • difficulty in breathing or swallowing • rash, itching or hives on the skin • feeling faint or dizzy • fast or irregular heartbeat • confusion • hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real) • seizures
