What Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets are and what they are used for Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets contain divalproex sodium, which is an anticonvulsant medicine used to treat epilepsy and certain types of mental illness. It works by stabilising the electrical activity in the brain. Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets are used to treat: • Epilepsy • Mania associated with bipolar disorder • Migraine headaches 2. Before you take Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets Do not take Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets if you: • are allergic (hypersensitive) to divalproex sodium or any of the other ingredients of Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets (listed in section 6) • have a liver disorder • are pregnant or breast-feeding • are taking other medicines that interact with Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets (see section 3) Take special care with Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets if you: • have a history of depression or suicidal thoughts • have a history of liver or kidney problems • have a history of blood disorders • have a history of alcohol or drug abuse • are elderly • are taking other medicines that interact with Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets (see section 3) Taking other medicines Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is especially important if you are taking any of the following: • other medicines used to treat epilepsy or mental illness • medicines used to treat depression • medicines used to treat HIV medicines used to treat ulcers Taking Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets with food and drink You should take Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets with food. Pregnancy and breast-feeding Do not take Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Driving and using machines Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets may cause drowsiness, dizziness or blurred vision. If you experience any of these effects, do not drive or operate machinery. Important information about some of the ingredients of Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets contain lactose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine. 3. How to take Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets Always take Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The usual dose is: Adults: The usual starting dose is 500mg to 1000mg a day, taken as a single dose or divided into two or three doses. Your doctor may increase the dose gradually until the best dose for you is reached. The maximum dose is 3000mg a day. Elderly: Your doctor may start you on a lower dose and increase it gradually. Children: The dose for children is based on their weight. Your doctor will tell you how much to give. If you take more Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets than you should If you take more Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets than you should, contact your doctor or nearest hospital casualty department immediately. Take the medicine pack with you. Symptoms of an overdose may include drowsiness, confusion, tremor, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and decreased consciousness. If you forget to take Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. If you stop taking Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets Do not stop taking Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets without talking to your doctor. If you stop taking Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets suddenly, your condition may worsen or you may have unwanted side effects. Your doctor will tell you how to stop taking Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets gradually. 4. Possible side effects Like all medicines, Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Stop taking Divalproex Sodium 250mg Tablets and see a doctor immediately if you experience any of the following: • Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing • Severe stomach pain • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) • Unusual bleeding or bruising • Unusual tiredness or weakness • Loss of appetite • Dark urine • Pale stools • Unusual weight gain or loss • Unusual changes in mood or behaviour • Unusual changes in vision • Unusual changes in the way you think or feel • Unusual changes in your ability to
