1. What Azithromycin is and what it is used for

Azithromycin is an antibiotic. It is used to treat infections caused by certain bacteria.

Azithromycin is used to treat infections of the lungs, skin, throat, ears, sinuses, and urinary tract. It is also used to treat certain sexually transmitted infections.

2. What you need to know before you take Azithromycin

Do not take Azithromycin:

• if you are allergic to azithromycin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).

• if you have ever had an allergic reaction to any other antibiotic.

Warnings and precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Azithromycin:

• if you have liver or kidney problems.

• if you have a heart rhythm disorder.

• if you have a history of Long QT Syndrome.

• if you have myasthenia gravis.

• if you have a history of jaundice or liver problems caused by taking azithromycin.

• if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Other medicines and Azithromycin

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Driving and using machines

Azithromycin may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience these symptoms, do not drive or use any tools or machines.

3. How to take Azithromycin

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

The usual dose is one tablet (250 mg) once a day for three days.

Swallow the tablet with a glass of water.

If you take more Azithromycin than you should

If you take more Azithromycin than you should, tell your doctor or go to a hospital straight away.

If you forget to take Azithromycin

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose as usual. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Stop taking Azithromycin and seek medical help immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects:

• Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing.

• Severe skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis.

• Severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or blood in the stools.

• Severe liver problems such as jaundice.

• Severe muscle pain or weakness.

• Severe dizziness or fainting.

• Severe chest pain or irregular heartbeat.

• Severe headache, confusion, or seizures.

• Severe pain or swelling in the joints.

• Severe bruising or bleeding.

• Severe yellowing of the skin or eyes.

• Severe difficulty breathing.

Other side effects include:

• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain.

• Headache.

• Dizziness.

• Rash.

• Vaginal itching or discharge.

• Joint pain.

• Muscle pain.

• Fatigue.

• Changes in taste.

• Changes in appetite.

• Changes in weight.

• Changes in vision.

• Changes in hearing.

• Changes in smell.

• Changes in skin colour.

• Changes in blood pressure.

BEFORE YOU TAKE AZITHROMYCIN 250MG TABLETS Do not take AZITHROMYCIN 250MG TABLETS if: • You are allergic (hypersensitive) to azithromycin or any of the other ingredients of AZITHROMYCIN 250MG TABLETS (listed in section 6). • You have ever had liver problems caused by taking azithromycin. Take special care with AZITHROMYCIN 250MG TABLETS • If you have any kidney problems, your doctor may need to adjust the dose of AZITHROMYCIN 250MG TABLETS. • If you have any liver problems, your doctor may need to adjust the dose of AZITHROMYCIN 250MG TABLETS. • If you have any heart problems, your doctor may need to adjust the dose of AZITHROMYCIN 250MG TABLETS. • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, you should not take AZITHROMYCIN 250MG TABLETS.
