You might think that because it’s a fruit you’ll get the same benefits as eating the fresh version. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

Dried fruit does have some benefits and can be a great alternative for sweet snacks like candy. However, you need to be wary of which ones are beneficial for you. Some dried fruits do contain additional sweeteners. In fact, the average ounce of dried fruit contains about 16 grams of sugar. And because of this snack being looked at as “healthy,” you’ll be convinced to grab handfuls of it, which won’t support your rapid weight loss goals.

Just because it has the word, “diet” in it, doesn’t mean you should add it to yours!

“If you’re a soda lover, you may be tempted to switch to diet soda to lose weight,” says Lisa R. Young, Ph.D., RDN, author of Finally Full, Finally Slim, and The Portion Teller Plan. “But drinking it may backfire in the weight loss department.”

Young says that drinking diet soda may increase your cravings for sugar. She also suggests that many people also drink diet soda along with eating unhealthy food like French fries or cookies, making the drink even more harmful to your body.

Although it may seem like an easy and fairly healthy grab-and-go snack or breakfast, certain traditional granola bars could be loaded with unhealthy ingredients such as sugar and hydrogenated oils. They also don’t contain a lot of protein, making this a non-nutritious food option.

The same goes for regular granola. Although it tastes good and can be an extra crunch and sweetener topping, it’s not substantial.

Not only will you not feel full for a longer period of time, but you are putting the wrong ingredients into your body that won’t help you lose weight.

“Yes, it is fat-free, but it’s full of sugar and can cause weight gain if you eat too big a portion,” says Young. “Many people think they have a ‘free pass’ when it comes to eating fat-free products.”

Young also mentions that, unlike Greek yogurt, the frozen version contains few nutrients, including protein.
