What Omeprazole is and what it is used for Omeprazole belongs to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors. It works by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. Omeprazole is used to treat the following conditions: • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) • Peptic ulcer disease • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome • Helicobacter pylori infection (in combination with other medicines) • Prevention of stomach ulcers in patients taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) 2. Before you take Omeprazole Do not take Omeprazole if: • You are allergic (hypersensitive) to omeprazole or any of the other ingredients of Omeprazole (listed in section 6) • You are taking medicines called ‘cisapride’ or ‘tegaserod’. Take special care with Omeprazole: • If you have liver problems • If you have kidney problems • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding • If you are taking other medicines (see section 3) Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Omeprazole if: • You have ever had an allergic reaction to any other medicine • You have any other medical conditions • You are taking any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. Taking other medicines Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is especially important if you are taking any of the following: • Warfarin or other medicines used to thin the blood • Digoxin (used to treat heart problems) • Ketoconazole or itraconazole (used Uses

Omeprazole 20mg is a medication used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems (such as acid reflux). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. It can also be used to prevent ulcers in certain patients.

WHAT OMEPRAZOLE 20MG CAPSULES ARE AND WHAT THEY ARE USED FOR The name of your medicine is Omeprazole 20mg Capsules (called Omeprazole throughout this leaflet). It contains a medicine called omeprazole. This belongs to a group of medicines called ‘proton pump inhibitors’. They work by reducing the amount of acid that your stomach produces. Omeprazole is used in adults for the short-term treatment of reflux symptoms (for example heartburn and acid regurgitation) in reflux oesophagitis. Reflux oesophagitis is an inflammation of the gullet (oesophagus) caused by stomach acid leaking back up (refluxing) into it. Omeprazole is also used in adults for the long-term treatment of conditions where your stomach produces too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. 2. Taking other medicines Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines. This includes medicines obtained without a prescription, including herbal medicines. This is because Omeprazole 20mg Capsules can affect the way some other medicines work. Also some medicines can affect the way Omeprazole 20mg Capsules work. In particular, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following: • medicines containing nelfinavir (used to treat HIV infection). • medicines containing rilpivirine (used to treat HIV infection). • medicines containing atazanavir (used to treat HIV infection). • medicines containing cilostazol (used to treat intermittent claudication). • medicines containing clopidogrel (used to prevent blood clots). • medicines containing tacrolimus (used to prevent organ rejection after transplantation). • medicines containing voriconazole (used to treat fungal infections). • medicines containing rifampicin (used to treat bacterial infections). • medicines containing phenytoin (used to treat epilepsy). • medicines containing St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) (a herbal remedy). • medicines containing digoxin (used to treat heart failure). • medicines containing warfarin (used to thin the blood). • medicines containing ciclosporin (used to prevent organ rejection after transplantation). • medicines containing methotrexate (used to treat cancer and rheumatoid arthritis). • medicines containing ampicillin (used to treat bacterial infections). Pregnancy and breast-feeding Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. Do not take Omeprazole 20mg Capsules if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Driving and using machines Omeprazole 20mg Capsules are not known to affect your ability to drive or use machines. 3. HOW TO TAKE OMEPRAZOLE 20MG CAPSULES Always take Omeprazole 20mg Capsules exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The usual dose is: Adults: • For the short-term treatment of reflux symptoms (for example heartburn and acid regurgitation) in reflux oesophagitis: The usual dose is one capsule (20mg) a day. • For the long-term treatment of conditions where your stomach produces too much acid: The usual dose is one capsule (20mg) a day. Your doctor may increase your dose if necessary. Swallow the capsules whole with a drink of water. Do not chew the capsules. You can take the capsules before, during or after a meal. If you take more Omeprazole 20mg Capsules than you should If you (or someone else) swallow a lot of capsules at the same time, or if you think a child has swallowed any, contact your nearest hospital casualty department or your doctor immediately. Symptoms of an overdose are not known. If you forget to take Omeprazole 20mg Capsules If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. If you stop taking Omeprazole 20mg Capsules Do not stop taking your capsules unless your doctor tells you to. If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist. 4. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS Like all medicines, Omeprazole 20mg Capsules can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Stop taking Omeprazole 20mg Capsules and see a doctor straight away if you notice any of the following serious side effects – you may need urgent medical treatment: • Allergic reactions. Symptoms may include: – rash – itching – swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat – difficulty in breathing or swallowing. • Severe stomach pain. • Severe diarrhoea. • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice). • Severe blistering or peeling of the skin. • Unusual bleeding or bruising. • Severe tiredness or weakness. • Loss of appetite. • Dark urine. • Severe itching. • Unexplained fever. • Severe headache. • Severe dizziness. • Severe muscle pain. • Severe abdominal pain. • Severe nausea or vomiting. • Severe constipation. • Severe chest pain. • Severe back pain. • Severe joint pain. • Severe rash. • Severe itching. • Severe hives. • Severe difficulty breathing. • Severe swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. Other side effects include: • Headache. • Dizziness. • Abdominal pain. • Diarrhoea. • Constipation. • Nausea. • Vomiting. • Flatulence. • Dry mouth. • Skin rash. • Itching. • Hair loss. • Muscle pain. • Joint pain. • Fatigue. • Fever. • Depression. • Anxiety. • Insomnia. • Taste disturbances. • Visual disturbances. • Increased liver enzymes. • Increased blood sugar levels. • Increased cholesterol
