What Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets are and what they are used for Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets contain the active ingredient methylprednisolone, which is a type of medicine known as a corticosteroid. Corticosteroids are hormones produced naturally by the adrenal glands. They have many important functions, including control of inflammatory responses. Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets are used to treat a wide range of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, including: • Asthma • Allergic reactions • Skin conditions • Rheumatoid arthritis • Inflammatory bowel disease • Lupus • Multiple sclerosis Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets can also be used to treat certain types of cancer. 2. Before you take Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets Do not take Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets if you: • are allergic to methylprednisolone or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6) • have a current or past history of tuberculosis • have a current or past history of herpes simplex infection of the eye • have a current or past history of fungal infection • have a current or past history of liver disease • are pregnant or breastfeeding • are taking other medicines that may interact with Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets (see section 4). Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets if you: • have a current or past history of heart disease • have a current or past history of high blood pressure • have a current or past history of diabetes • have a current or past history of depression • have a current or past history of mental illness • have a current or past history of osteoporosis • have a current or past history of glaucoma • have a current or past history of cataracts • have a current or past history of kidney disease • have a current or past history of stomach ulcers • have a current or past history of any other medical condition. Taking other medicines Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is because Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets can affect the way some other medicines work. Also some medicines can affect the way Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets work. In particular, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following: • anticoagulants (medicines to thin the blood) • anticonvulsants (medicines to treat epilepsy) • antidiabetics (medicines to treat diabetes) • antifungals (medicines to treat fungal infections) • antibiotics (medicines to treat infections) • barbiturates (medicines to treat anxiety or sleep disorders) • beta-blockers (medicines to treat high blood pressure or heart conditions) • diuretics (medicines to treat fluid retention) • immunosuppressants (medicines to suppress the immune system) • non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (medicines to treat pain and inflammation) • oral contraceptives (birth control pills) • salicylates (medicines to treat pain and inflammation) • steroids (medicines to treat inflammation) • theophylline (medicine to treat asthma). Pregnancy and breast-feeding Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets should not be taken during pregnancy or while breast-feeding. Driving and using machines Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets may cause dizziness or blurred vision. If you experience these effects, do not drive or operate machinery. 3. How to take Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets Always take Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The usual dose is one tablet taken twice a day. Your doctor may adjust your dose depending on your condition and response to treatment. Do not take more than the recommended dose. If you take more than the recommended dose, talk to your doctor or go to the nearest hospital straight away. If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist. 4. Possible side effects Like all medicines, Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Stop taking Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets and seek immediate medical help if you experience any of the following: • Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing. • Signs of infection such as fever, chills, sore throat, mouth ulcers, unusual bruising or bleeding. • Signs of high blood sugar such as increased thirst, increased urination, confusion, drowsiness, flushing, rapid breathing or fruity breath odour. • Signs of low potassium levels such as muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, confusion, feeling tired or dizzy. • Signs of liver problems such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, abdominal pain or loss of appetite. • Signs of Cushing’s syndrome such as weight gain, moon face, thinning of the skin, easy bruising, increased facial hair, changes in mood or behaviour. How to store Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use Methylprednisolone 16mg Tablets after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and blister after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. Do not store above 25°C. Store in the original package in order to protect from light and moisture. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help to protect the environment. 6.
