Millions of men take Viagra–a  prescription drug to help overcome erectile dysfunction, a condition that makes it difficult to maintain or have an erection. According to Medical News Today, scientific evidence proves the pill works. “Across the studies, between 43% and 83% of men who took Viagra had improved erections. (These rates varied depending on the cause of their ED and the dosage of Viagra being used.) In comparison, improved erections occurred in 10% to 24% of men who took a placebo (no active drug).” But is it safe? Dr. Micah Dickey Medical Director with Dignity Health Medical Group – Oxnard, says yes! “Viagra is safe for most patients as long as their doctors say it’s safe for them to engage in sexual activity (they don’t have out of control high blood pressure or ongoing cardiac issues). ” That said, there can be serious side effects. If you’re taking other medications with Viagra, Dr. Nathan Newman, lead physician at Santa Monica Urgent Care warns that it could be dangerous. “If a man has been taking Viagra with medicine in the same class and is experiencing chest pains, it could be a heart attack, They can’t take nitrates, like nitroglycerin and the reason is it can drop the blood pressure so low, the patient could die.”

Dr. Newman says, “Some men will have trouble with their vision. Everything will have a blue tint.” However, he explained that the side effect will end, “several hours after you’ve taken Viagra.” It’s a temporary issue.

Yuna Rapoport, MD, MPH Board Certified Ophthalmologist adds, “The blue tint is caused by a decrease of enzyme activity from Viagra. This makes the retinal rod cells more sensitive. Since these rod cells are more sensitive to light with a wavelength near 498 nm, this light looks more blue- green. The effect wears off with discontinued use of the medication. Other common side effects for the eyes include light sensitivity and blurry vision.”

“Viagra increases nitric oxide by inhibiting PDE5,” says Dr. Leann Poston M.D., M.B.A., M.Ed. “Increasing nitric oxide dilates small blood vessels and increases blood flow. Increased blood flow into the penis supports the ability to attain and maintain an erection. Increasing blood flow in other areas of the body leads to side effects. Increased blood flow to the brain can cause a headache. Drink plenty of fluids when taking Viagra to decrease the risk of headaches.”

Dr. Dickey adds, “Frequently, patients will experience headaches after taking viagra.  Typically the higher the dosage, the worse the headache.”

According to Dr. Poston, “Viagra dilates blood vessels which can decrease your blood pressure, causing dizziness or lightheadedness. Drink plenty of fluids when taking Viagra. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you and be careful when moving from sitting or lying positions to standing.”

Dr. Jenna Liphart Rhoads Ph.D., RN, CNEAdvisor at NurseTogether says, “For the same reason that a man can experience a headache while taking Viagra, he could experience a feeling of lightheadedness or dizziness, especially when standing up. The relaxation of the blood vessels also lowers blood pressure which decreases blood flow to the brain. When feelings of dizziness or lightheadedness occur upon standing, it is called orthostatic hypotension.”

“Increased blood flow and dilated capillaries in the skin can cause facial flushing,” says Dr. Poston.

Dr. Rhoads adds, “Warmth and redness of the face, neck, and chest is also called facial flushing. This occurs when a man takes Viagra because of the relaxation of the blood vessels. When the blood vessels in the body relax, blood can pool in the face, neck, and chest which causes warmth and redness.” And to get through this pandemic at your healthiest, don’t miss these 35 Places You’re Most Likely to Catch COVID.
