Further information 1. WHAT LEVOCETIRIZINE IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR Levocetirizine is an antihistamine. It is used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) and hives (urticaria). It works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance produced by the body when it reacts to a foreign substance such as pollen, dust or animal hair. 2. Take special care with Levocetirizine: • if you have kidney or liver problems • if you have a history of epilepsy • if you have a history of depression • if you have a history of asthma • if you have a history of glaucoma • if you have a history of urinary retention • if you have a history of prostate problems • if you are pregnant or breast-feeding • if you are taking other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription. Taking other medicines Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is especially important if you are taking any of the following: • medicines for depression (e.g. tricyclic antidepressants) • medicines for anxiety (e.g. benzodiazepines) • medicines for epilepsy (e.g. phenytoin) • medicines for high blood pressure (e.g. beta-blockers) • medicines for Parkinson’s disease (e.g. levodopa) • medicines for heart problems (e.g. digoxin) • medicines for stomach problems (e.g. cimetidine) • medicines for fungal infections (e.g. ketoconazole) • medicines for HIV infection (e.g. ritonavir) • medicines for malaria (e.g. chloroquine) • medicines for tuberculosis (e.g. rifampicin) • medicines for pain relief (e.g. codeine) • medicines for allergies (e.g. astemizole, terfenadine) • medicines for colds and flu (e.g. dextromethorphan) • medicines for mental illness (e.g. pimozide) • medicines for muscle spasms (e.g. baclofen) • medicines for urinary problems (e.g. oxybutynin) • medicines for thyroid problems (e.g. levothyroxine) • medicines for asthma (e.g. salbutamol) • medicines for diabetes (e.g. insulin). Taking Levocetirizine with food and drink You can take Levocetirizine with or without food. Pregnancy and breast-feeding Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. Driving and using machines Levocetirizine may cause drowsiness or dizziness in some people. If you are affected, do not drive or operate machinery. 3. HOW TO TAKE LEVOCETIRIZINE Always take Levocetirizine exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The usual dose is: Adults and children aged 12 years and over: The recommended dose is one tablet (5mg) once a day. Children aged 6 to 12 years: The recommended dose is one half tablet (2.5mg) once a day. Elderly: The recommended dose is one tablet (5mg) once a day. If you take more Levocetirizine than you should If you (or someone else) swallow a lot of the tablets all together, or if you think a child has swallowed any of the tablets, contact your nearest hospital casualty department or your doctor immediately. 4. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS Like all medicines, Levocetirizine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Stop taking Levocetirizine and see a doctor or go to a hospital straight away if you notice any of the following serious side effects – you may need urgent medical treatment: • swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat • difficulty in breathing or swallowing • rash, itching or hives on the skin • yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) • signs of an allergic reaction such as a rash, itching or hives on the skin, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body, shortness of breath, wheezing or trouble breathing. Other side effects include: Common (affects 1 to 10 users in 100): • headache • feeling sleepy • dry mouth • sore throat • feeling sick • diarrhoea • stomach pain • feeling dizzy • tiredness • feeling anxious • difficulty sleeping • muscle pain • joint pain • rash • itching • hives • increased sweating • increased appetite • weight gain • increased saliva production • blurred vision • ringing in the ears • nosebleeds • increased heart rate • increased blood pressure • difficulty urinating • urinary tract infection • increased liver enzymes. Uncommon (affects 1 to 10 users in 1,000): • depression • confusion • hallucinations • agitation • aggression • restlessness • tremor • difficulty concentrating • memory problems • feeling of weakness • feeling of numbness • tingling sensation • muscle spasms • difficulty breathing • wheezing • increased sensitivity to light • increased sensitivity to sound • increased sensitivity to touch • increased sensitivity to pain • increased sensitivity to temperature • increased sensitivity to pressure • increased sensitivity to vibration • increased sensitivity to smell • increased sensitivity Uses

Levocetirizine dihydrochloride 5mg is used to treat symptoms of allergies, such as sneezing, runny nose, itching, and watery eyes. It is also used to treat chronic hives and itching due to a condition called chronic idiopathic urticaria. WHAT LEVOCETIRIZINE DIHYDROCHLORIDE 5MG FILM-COATED TABLETS ARE AND WHAT THEY ARE USED FOR Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride 5mg Film-Coated Tablets contain the active ingredient levocetirizine dihydrochloride, which is an antihistamine. Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride 5mg Film-Coated Tablets are used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) and other allergies such as dust or pet allergies (perennial allergic rhinitis). 2. BEFORE YOU TAKE LEVOCETIRIZINE DIHYDROCHLORIDE 5MG FILM-COATED TABLETS Do not take Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride 5mg Film-Coated Tablets if you: • are allergic (hypersensitive) to levocetirizine dihydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride 5mg Film-Coated Tablets (listed in section 6) • are pregnant or breast-feeding • are under 12 years of age Take special care with Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride 5mg Film-Coated Tablets if you: • have kidney or liver problems • have a history of epilepsy • have a history of depression • have a history of urinary retention • have a history of prostate enlargement • have a history of glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye) • have a history of difficulty in passing urine • have a history of asthma • have a history of heart problems • have a history of high blood pressure • have a history of liver problems Taking other medicines Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine. 3. HOW TO TAKE LEVOCETIRIZINE DIHYDROCHLORIDE 5MG FILM-COATED TABLETS Always take Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride 5mg Film-Coated Tablets exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The recommended dose is: Adults and adolescents 12 years of age and over: The usual dose is one tablet (5mg) once a day. Elderly: The usual dose is one tablet (5mg) once a day. Children under 12 years of age: Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride 5mg Film-Coated Tablets are not recommended for use in children under 12 years of age. If you take more Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride 5mg Film-Coated Tablets than you should If you take more Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride 5mg Film-Coated Tablets than you should, talk to a doctor or go to a hospital straight away. Take the medicine pack with you. This is so the doctor knows what you have taken. If you forget to take Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride 5mg Film-Coated Tablets If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember.
