In 2021, the wholesaler opened 20 new stores internationally; and with well over 500 total locations in the U.S. and over 800 total warehouses around the world, the big-box retailer has shown no signs of slowing down. Just when you thought that the retail giant couldn’t get any bigger, Costco has revealed nine new and upcoming locations across the U.S. and Canada—just a handful of the 28 stores the chain expects to open this year.
The wait is almost over for many cities, as Costco revealed that it’s slated to open a handful of stores by the start of the summer. These are listed on the company site’s “New Locations” page. As the wholesaler prepares for its newest stores to open, here are the states (plus some international locations) that are gearing up to welcome a new warehouse of their own in the coming months. One of the newest stores is underway for members residing in the Salem, Oregon area. Situated right along the states’ capital city, the warehouse is a relocation that was approved in 2020. While news of the new location was met with some positive responses on Reddit, others expressed concerns of increased traffic in the area and questioned what would happen with the previous Costco location.
Reddit user r/freedcreativity wrote that “I have no idea who (other than existing big box stores, which have significant presence in Salem already) would use the existing huge square footage.” One Costco employee responded to the thread and mentioned plans to “sell/donate EVERYTHING in the old warehouse,” while planting trees/foliage in the parking lot. As announced by the company’s website, this Salem store is coming in March 2022.

Nearly two years after Costco submitted building site plans for the area, the city of Riverton, Utah joins 12 other stores in the state. With nearly 45,000 residents, Riverton is said to be “part of one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States.”
One Reddit user — seemingly a warehouse employee had expressed their enthusiasm for the store’s opening after hearing rumors of employees transferring to that particular store location. The rumors can now be put to rest, because the store will be making its way to the town in May 2022.
Costco plans to kick off the summer by opening up a store at the World Commerce Center in St. Augustine. The next closest existing Costco locations were in Jacksonville, Fla.—nearly 45 minutes away.
One Costco member noted on Reddit that they had to take a “monthly drive” just to get to the nearest warehouse. As reported by the Jacksonville Daily Record, Costco bought nearly 17 acres at the community center for a hefty $2.5 million price tag. The media outlet said that the 162,000-square-foot store will include the tire center, liquor store, and gas station. The site is expected to open in June 2022.
College Station, Texas is yet another location that plans to open a warehouse in the summer. One local news station reported that the long-awaited retailer started entered the building phase back in November 2021. Members won’t have to wait too much longer, because the store is expected to open in June 2022.
In response to the building plans, College Station’s Mayor Karl Mooney told KBTX that “… we’ve set a goal in our agreement with them that they’d be opening no later than 2023. But they’ve set a more ambitious goal so I have no doubt that they’re going to be building and just getting up. You know people are very excited about Costco coming to town.”
The Golden State soon will see two new locations in San Marcos and Murrieta. The San Marcos location will become the second Costco Business Center in San Diego County in March 2022, replacing the big-box store company Fry’s Electronics. Costco says that members who shop at the Business Center can find a larger selection of drinks, single-serving snacks, and earlier store hours than the regular stores (as early as 7 a.m.!).
Business Center news aside, Costco is also slated to open a store in Murrieta—and it will be the city’s first warehouse. While the then-proposed site was initially met with some environmental concerns back in 2020, the project is nearing completion and plans to open in June 2022.
In addition to adding warehouses to five states in the U.S., Costco is continuing its expansion throughout the northern neighbors. Three different locations are already set to open in Canada this year.
Kelowna, British Columbia is the latest to open in February 2022. The remaining two locations-Anjou, Quebec and North Oshawa, Ontario will open in June 2022. The Kelowna store is a relocation center, the Anjou location will be a Costco Business Center, and North Oshawa will be a standard warehouse store.
