Further information 1. WHAT CHOLECALCIFEROL IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR Cholecalciferol is a form of Vitamin D. It is used to treat and prevent Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus from food. It is also important for the normal growth and development of bones and teeth. 2. BEFORE YOU TAKE CHOLECALCIFEROL Do not take Cholecalciferol if: • you are allergic (hypersensitive) to cholecalciferol or any of the other ingredients of Cholecalciferol (listed in section 6) • you have high levels of calcium in your blood (hypercalcaemia) • you have high levels of calcium in your urine (hypercalciuria) • you have kidney stones • you have sarcoidosis (a condition where lumps of cells form in different parts of the body) • you have an overactive parathyroid gland (hyperparathyroidism) • you have a tumour of the bone (osteogenic sarcoma) • you have a tumour of the parathyroid gland (parathyroid adenoma) Take special care with Cholecalciferol: • If you have kidney problems, your doctor may want to monitor your calcium levels. • If you have any other medical conditions, please tell your doctor or pharmacist before taking Cholecalciferol. Taking other medicines: Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. 3. HOW TO TAKE CHOLECALCIFEROL Always take Cholecalciferol exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The usual dose is one capsule daily. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Do not chew the capsule. If you take more Cholecalciferol than you should: If you take too many capsules, contact your doctor or nearest hospital casualty department immediately. Take the medicine pack with you. 4. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS Like all medicines, Cholecalciferol can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. If you experience any of the following, stop taking Cholecalciferol and tell your doctor immediately: • Allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty in breathing or swallowing. • High levels of calcium in your blood (hypercalcaemia) which may cause nausea, vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, confusion, tiredness, muscle weakness or bone pain. If you experience any of the following, tell your doctor: • High levels of calcium in your urine (hypercalciuria) which may cause pain in your lower back or side, cloudy or smelly urine. • Kidney stones. If you experience any other side effects, please tell your doctor or pharmacist. 5. HOW TO STORE CHOLECALCIFEROL Keep out of the reach and sight of children. Do not use Cholecalciferol after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and blister after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. Do not store above 25°C. The other ingredients are maize starch, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, gelatin, titanium dioxide (E171), iron oxide yellow (E172), iron oxide red (E172). What Cholecalciferol looks like and contents of the pack: Cholecalciferol 400 IU capsules are white, hard gelatin capsules with a yellow cap and a yellow body.
